Question: How is a dating scan performed?

How is a dating scan performed? A dating scan is carried out by ultrasound. A sonographer, who is usually a radiographer or a midwife trained in ultrasound, will complete your scan. If the scan is after 10 weeks, ultrasound recordings are usually made through your abdomen.

What do you wear to a dating scan?

Wear suitable clothing. Wear loose fitting clothes for easy access and to limit the spread of the gel. A top that can easily be lifted whilst maintaining your modesty, plus a skirt or trousers that can be rolled or pushed down at the waistband are best. The gel will wash off easily too.

Do you have to take your clothes off for ultrasound?

If you are wearing a two piece outfit, it is not necessary for you to change for this examination. The sonographer will have you lie down on the examination table and ask you to pull your pants and underwear down to the level of your hips. A towel will be placed over your pants to protect them from the gel.
