Scientists have now shown that people who were born blind use a brain map with a very similar layout to distinguish between these same categories. When processing visual input, our brain uses different areas to recognize faces, body parts, scenes, and objects.

Many blind people use reflected sound waves to build a mental picture of their surroundings (similar to bats and dolphins) in a process known as echolocation. Most use it all the time without realising, to avoid walking into things.
