The widow or widower needs to be emotionally ready. An emotionally needy person will expect too much from their partner. With this understanding in mind, remarrying should happen when the person is healed and emotionally ready. In my opinion, a widow or widower should wait for a minimum of two years before remarrying.

Can you remarry after being widowed?

If a widow(er) remarries before age 60, she or he forfeits the benefit and, therefore, faces a marriage penalty. Under current law, there is no penalty if the remarriage occurs at 60 years of age or later. Only since 1979 have widow(er)s been allow to marry at or after age 60 and not face reductions in benefit amounts.
