Most telephone wire are one or more twisted pairs of copper wire. The most common type is the 4-strand (2 twisted pair). This consists of red and green wires, which makes a pair, and yellow and black wires, which makes the other pair.

What wire does a landline use?

Telephone wiring is color-coded red, green, yellow and black. They are used in pairs for each phone line you have. Repairmen in fact refer to the wires in terms of pairs, so technically a standard four wire telephone line has two pairs.

Is alarm cable the same as telephone cable?

Using telephone cable for an intruder alarm system isnt really good practice It would work but is likely to cause problems in the future. Notice how alarm cable is stranded aluminium and telephone is solid copper. Also wouldnt recommend using alarm cable for a telephone system!
