Question: Is vintage McCoy pottery Food Safe?

According to ironstone dealers Ernie and Bev Dieringer (who use their antique ironstone as their everyday dishes) and McCoy dealer Amy Musher (who has used her McCoy mixing bowls for many years), both of these types of old pottery can be used safely in the home today.

Is vintage pottery safe?

We do not recommend not using old ware unless it shows signs of deterioration such as cracking or pitting of the glaze. This could be a sign that the glaze is disintegrating and could allow lead to leach into food.

Does vintage pottery contain lead?

Many of the old glazes used on antique or vintage china contain some level of lead. If your china is highly decorated or multicolored, there is a better chance that it contains lead glazing or decorations using lead. Also, lead can leach from china that is hosting foods high in acidity.

Does old Corelle have lead?

All our products have been Lead free since the mid-2000s. Lead content has never been regulated until recently. We recommend using the items you have as decorative pieces.

Is Hadley Pottery lead free?

The glazes are compounded and ground at the Pottery on Story Avenue in Louisville and are all lead and cadmium free. The dominantly blue, whimsical designs are consistent with Mary Alice Hadleys originals. Hadley pottery is dishwasher, oven, and microwave safe, using proper care.

Can you drink out of a clay mug?

Although air dry clay may hold the water for a short period of time (longer if its sealed with a waterproof varnish), its not advisable to drink that water. Air drying clay is not intended for making pottery for food or beverages. Hot drinks may speed up the deterioration of the clay.

How can you tell if a dish has lead in it?

If the decorations are rough or raised, if you can feel the decoration when you rub your finger over the dish, or if you can see brush strokes above the glazed surface, the decoration is probably on top of the glaze. If the decoration has begun to wear away, there may be an even greater lead hazard.

Is Hadley pottery still in business?

As of June 1, 2018, the Hadley Pottery Company will be under new ownership. It will be in the hands of the Day family, who have been involved with Hadley since its inception.

Is Hadley dishwasher safe?

Hadley pottery is dishwasher, oven, and microwave safe, using proper care. Dishwasher heat will not harm Hadley.
