Question: What happens at 6 week dating scan?

At 6 weeks, you wont, in general, be able to see much detail of your baby. The ultrasound scan, however, should be able to confirm the gestation age by measuring either the gestation sac or the foetal pole if visible. Sometimes but not always you will be able to see the babys heartbeat.

Is 6 weeks too early to see twins?

Its possible to see twins (or more) on an ultrasound at around six weeks, though one baby may be missed at this early stage. Sometimes a heartbeat is seen in one sac, but not in the other. Rescanning in a week or two may reveal a second heartbeat, or the scan may show that one sac is growing and the other still empty.
